Space STEM Project

Our Year 7 Newman are currently working on their Space STEM project. The driving question for this project is, ‘Can we live on Mars?’. This continues the model we developed in 2018 where we trial a STEM project with a small group of students with the aim of rolling it out across the cohort the following year.

The students are working across Mathematics, Science and Technology to learn all about the ‘red planet’ before they move into the main part of the project which involves building a ‘habitat’ that would allow humans to live on Mars.

The students have been assembled into ‘mission teams’ to tackle this task. At the launch they were presented with a lot of information about Mars and some different thinking around how they could approach the driving question.

This ‘front loading’ enabled the students to then consider what questions they need to answer in order to complete the project. They will need to complete their mission by the end of this term and then present their project to a panel of experts at a showcase in Term 3.

Here is a short video from the launch.
